Pelvic Floor Therapy

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that contribute to pelvic stability, internal organ support, sphincteric control and sexual health.

Just like any muscle in the body, these muscles can become tight, weak, uncoordinated or acutely injured from trauma. A common misconception of pelvic floor rehab is that it’s limited to kegels for urinary leakage. Although partly true, it’s really only a fraction of the story.

Any person of any age can experience pelvic floor dysfunction. These muscles are core muscles, working in conjunction with the hip, abdominal and spinal musculature as well as the respiratory diaphragm. They can become strained during pregnancy, heavy lifting, toileting habits, and repetitive impact (such as seen in running and gymnastics). They can tear during childbirth, and become restricted and uncoordinated with various gynecological / GI conditions. In fact, kegels are often an inappropriate exercise prescription and can sometimes make symptoms worse.

The pelvic floor muscles should be assessed, alongside each individual's unique anatomy, medical history, lifestyle and performance goals in order to provide the highest quality of care. Pelvic floor physical therapists are certified to examine the pelvic floor muscles internally and/or externally in order to provide a tailored rehabilitation program to meet the goals of the patient.

Dr. Caity Morris, Pelvic Floor Specialist

Caity Morris, PT, DPT, began her physical therapy career in outpatient orthopedics, while continuing her education in pelvic health through the Herman and Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute. She has found her passion in caring for patients with pelvic floor dysfunction and is not one to shy away from taboo topics that can impede someone’s quality of life.

Caity earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Sage Graduate School in Troy, New York, and her Bachelor of Psychology from Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York.

She has experience in acute and chronic injuries effecting the musculoskeletal and neurological systems, post-surgical care, and conditions influencing pelvic pain, urinary and bowel symptoms, and sexual dysfunction across all genders. Some common complaints she sees are urinary frequency, urgency, and incontinence, bowel urgency or constipation, and pain surrounding sexual activity.

Caity is an advocate for gender diversity in health care and has previously spoken on panels alongside other health professionals for transgender health and surgery and the role physical therapy has within this population. Additionally, she has collaborated with Urologists, Gynecologists, and Urogynecologists to improve awareness and access to pelvic floor dysfunction and care.

In her free time, Caity enjoys hiking with her dog Ronan, skiing, and finds a creative outlet in painting.
